Kaze Hikaru is a historical shoujo manga series by Watanabe Taeko that has been running in Japan since 1997. It tells the story of Tominaga Sei, who, after her father and brother are murder, goes under disguise as a boy, Kamiya Seizaburo so she can join the group that would later be known as the Shinsengumi so she can avenge their deaths. She is assigned to serve under Okita Souji, who soon learns her secret but seeing the sincerity of her spirit, eventually agrees to let her stay and fight with them.

The series features other Shinsengumi members and goes from the early days of the "Mibu-Roshi" and the factionalism that culminated in the assassination of Serizawa Kamo to the Ikeda-ya and on through the group's history. Led by Kondou Isami, with vice-commanders Hijikata Toshizo and Yamanami Keisuke. Captains Okita Souji, Nagakura Shinpachi, Saitou Hajime, Inoue Genzaburo, Toudou Heisuke and Harada Sanosuke are also represented, and Kashitaro Itou comes in later in the series. For fans of series such as Rurouni Kenshin or Peacemaker Kurogane, these names should be familiar to you. :)

Kaze Hikaru has a worldwide fandom, being published in Chinese, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Korean. Publication in English began in 2005 by Viz, under the Shojo Beat line.
