About
Released in Japan in 2002 by Enterbrain, Kidou Shinsengumi Moeyo Ken had
some big names behind it - Hiroi Ouji, who created Sakura Taisen, and Takahashi
Rumiko, known for internationally-known hits like Ranma 1/2 and InuYasha, did
the character designs. The other big name, of course, is the Shinsengumi!
Set in an alternate Meiji-era world where humans and demons (youkai) live
together, the daughters of the original Shinsengumi have formed Kidou
Shinsengumi, Inc. They keep the peace by going after unlicensed youkai who
could cause trouble. Kondou Yuko, Hijikata Toshie, and Okita Kaoru are led by
Oryou, whose son, Sakamoto Ryunosuke, has returned to town with his companion
youkai, Nekomaru. However, a group led by Saotome Miki wants to stand up for
the rights of youkai but her intention is really to get them on her side so that
she can rule Japan! All of that and they have to keep the money coming in...
building fantastic inventions to help them with their work isn't cheap!
Defending Kyoto and paying back their debt will keep this new generation of the
Shinsengumi busy!
Unfortunately, the PS2 game is not available in the US. It can be purchased
from sites like Amazon Japan but you will need a specially-equipped Playstation
system. The game is part adventure (fighting) and part RPG, so unlike some pure
fighting games some knowledge of Japanese is needed.
In 2003 an OAV series was made, and was later released in the US by ADV
Films. The summer of 2005 saw a 13-episode series released in Japan.
My thanks to hajimenokizu, my partner in many Shinsengumi-related sites.
