Yamazaki Susumu
  • Birth: Unknown – Died 1868
  • Shinsengumi Fukuchou Jokin, Sho Shi Chousayaku Ken Kansatsu
  • There are also differing opinions in the testimony of the survivors of the Shinsengumi, perhaps it was a secret because of his duty (spy)
  • He is said to be a native of Kansai (which includes the Kyoto) and since the Shinsengumi were from the Kanto area (Greater Edo – Tokyo) they found him very useful.
  • There is some doubt on whether he participated directly in the Ikedaya raid because there is no record of him receiving a reward, however he is most often credited as playing the important part of leading the Shinsengumi (through reconnaissance missions) to the events at the Ikedaya.
  • He seems to have excelled in academic ability as he accompanied the others in negotiations with the Court Nobles without fail
  • There is a lot of mystery surrounding Susumu’s death after Toba-Fushimi whether he died on route to the hospital in Osaka on board the Fuji-maru and some even say that he died without anybody knowing, which would rule out that he was with Kondou and the others on the Fuji-maru
  • He was quite older amongst the group, older than Hijikata it is said
  • His Kaimyo is Kenkouinkan Tsuki Yoshimikoji
  • His gravesite outside the Jutoku-ji Temple in Takinogawa Kita-ku, Tokyo
